Easter Eggs

Easter is going to be here before you know it and if you are looking for some inspiration I hope I can be the one to help you find it!

Today I decorated Easter Eggs. I am going to show you what I worked on and share some of my favourite ideas that can be found on other locations!

For each dye bath combine 1 cup boiling water with 2 tsp white vinegar and +/- 12 drops of food colouring in a cup.

For tie dyed eggs, use a bowl instead of a cup and add 2 tbsp olive oil to the mixture and stir with a fork. Roll egg gently in bath to pick of streaks of color. Remove egg from bath and blot oil off with a paper towel, then dry on wax paper. Once dry, lightly dip in another color if desired. (egg bath recipes adapted from food.com)

note: I discovered that I did not have any white vinegar and used pickle juice. It worked just fine!

These were made using spray glue instead of Mod Podge (or other types of glue used for decoupage) simply because I couldn’t find my glue supplies!

For The Little Ones – Interior inspiration for children’s rooms

Decorating advice, tips and inspiration for decorating a child’s bedroom.

There is no better room than a child’s room to let your imagination go! Still there are things you should think about before starting in a child’s room. Think on lighting, safety, practicality, colour palettes, the lay-out, and the feel of the room.

Lighting is very important and not only for the atmosphere. Choose not only for good lighting but also for safe lighting. The best is one light for good lighting and one softer smaller light.

Safety is something I don’t need to remind you of. I am certain most of you already know to check that the materials you use are safe for children. Keeping in mind the paints used as well as other materials. Furniture shouldn’t have small pieces that could fall or break off. Childproof electrical outlets and safety precautions on windows, doors & lighting are also among the basic things you should have covered in every room.

Comfort is also important. I just love these sleeping bags for babies. I didn’t have one for my daughter (almost 23 years ago in California… did they exist then?!).

Colour Palettes are extremely important. Try creating a palette that works well with the fabrics, furniture and wall decor. Try to avoid overloading one just one colour. The room can be playful but also needs to be calming. Cool colours along side warm colours provide a good balance. Bright colours are easiest to bring into the room in the toys and accessories since more often than not they are bright.

When considering a layout keep in mind for who it is for when decorating. There needs to be a play area and if you have the space a reading corner. The furniture needs to be sized for the child. For a child’s first bed you could choose for a children’s size bed or begin right away with a ‘grown up’ bed. Ikea has beds that can be adjusted as a child grows. I personally would think a child would sleep better in a not too large bed. If it is a larger room you could place the bed against the middle of a wall. If it is a smaller space it would be best to place it in the corner of the room allowing for a larger play area.

Use your imagination! Try mixing modern with vintage. There is nothing wrong with second hand furniture. The overall feel for the room should be playful, calming, stimulating and cosy. Finding that balance I think sounds more complicated than it is, right?

One thing I do not like about some interiors is that they look like showrooms. That somebody bought a set of furniture and some accessories and simply copied a showroom or catalog photograph showing little or no imagination. If you are not a DIY’er there are still many imaginative things you can do to create an original interior.

Are you a DIY’er? You could use magnetic paint in combination with other paints… including chalkboard paint.
